Penguin absolutely loves the weather. His stories are made up of lightening and tornadoes! So, inspired by the beautiful handmade bracelets in Michelle Powell’s book Paper Craft book, we set out to create some storm bangles. I thought Penguin would love to wear them while he acted out his stories. I feel it’s great to encourage imaginative play. So let’s see what happened!
I first made cardboard tubes from old cereal packets (toilet rolls would have been a bit too small for little wrists!)
Then with some help from Little Missy we covered round them in strips of newspaper using wall paper paste. We wanted them to be really strong so they could cope with lots of play.
I painted the background colour in a rich blue using acrylic paint and then got to work on the main design.
I realistically could fit three different types of weather on each bangle. So as Penguin has two arms, here’s what I came up with.
Tornado, Sunshine, Rainbow, Snow, Rain and Lightening.
I was super pleased with the result and excited watching Penguins imagination come to life!
Where does your little ones imagination take you? Out into space? Hunting for Dragons? To the next Rabbit Party?
He looks incredibly impressed with your efforts! Love them! These would be great for learning the weather, too!

Ahh thanks. He’s super into the weather, most of his drawings have tornadoes tearing through them!

I love this so much! We are currently doing weather crafts to teach my three year old about different types of weather. You could get them to chose which bangle matches the weather outside! Fantastic idea #howtosunday

What a wonderful idea, cereal packets are so versatile and I love how you have strengthened it with the newspaper and glue. the weather decoration gives it a real educational factor too, in fact it has sparked another idea with me for a weather vein. The acrylic paint works so well giving your bangles a beautifully glossy finish. Looks like they were a great hit too. Thank you so much for sharing with me on #Trash2Treasure

Omg first let me say your little one is so darn cute and your family is absolutely beautiful! I love the header picture of you all. Our imagination play takes us back millions of years to the dinosaurs time. #3 loves to play with her brothers dinosaurs and in the prehistoric times her dinosaur name is Noma! She loves driving cars too. #1 (my oldest daughter) loves theater which is some form imaginative play. She is an expert on acting out Frozen. #2 is a man boy and loves to cause chaos and havoc in his war zone with his army men. #4 has not quite figured out imagination as she is only 2 months but if she does I bet it is about her favorite treat “The Golden Milk”.

It is such a great idea to cover them in newspaper first. Ethan did something like this at school, but by the time it arrived home – it had already ripped apart. I will show this technique to him. 🙂 x

Poor Ethan, that’s such a shame. these did take quite a while to dry but they are strong so well worth the extra time spent.
