We love telling stories in our house. Leo is a great story teller and tells our children stories of their alter egos, which they absolutely love. I remember one of Little Missy’s first stories being about singing dragons.
A couple of years ago one of my best friends made some story stones for Penguin. Story stones are basically stones with pictures on which can give us ideas of what going to happen next in our story. Penguin really loved them and they encouraged him with his story telling.
I really enjoyed making ‘Our Pebble Family’ and with my growing collection on stones I thought I’d try and make some story stones. One of our little munchkins friends is celebrating a birthday next week so hopefully it will make a lovely gift.
First of all I used white acrylic to paint the stones. I sketched out some basic pictures (I’m not the illustrator in the family!) and using a permanent marker copied the pictures onto the stones. I thought I’d try using coloured sharpee’s rather than acyllic paint. I liked the vibrant colours of the sharpee’s.
However, when I varnished the stones to give them more longevity the colours ran. I had to result to dabbing the varnish on to get around this problem. Although they aren’t perfect, I hope the recepiant will be pleased.
Has anyone handmade a gift for your child that you love? I’d love to hear about it. Please comment below.

I love the idea of story stones, I think they would be fun for kids to paint themselves then swap stones and make stories from each other’s stones. I might try this in craft hour here.

I do love my sharpees though was a little sad that some felt like they were drying out 😦

I was meant to see this post. You were meant to write this and share this so I would find it. My youngest (4) asked me this morning on the way to school if we could paint rocks. I told him sure. Now I read this and know we will 🙂 Very cool idea and some great painting!

Love these too – so great to help the kids develop their imaginations, and I’m sure these story stones will help them with their creative writing when they’re older too. So great to have more ideas of cheap but fun and educational activities for the kids on a rainy day. My wife is very crafty too so this will be right up her street! #FabFridayPost

I think this is such a great idea – I always struggle with getting friends’ children birthday gifts. I usually go with clothes because I know we have issues with toys & clutter so don’t want to add to my friends own and children can always use new clothes. But this is such a nice personal touch. I checked out your original post – your pebble family is awesome! #FabFridayPost

Awww thanks. I agree with you, buying gifts can be really tricky, especially when children seem to have so much already!

What a special gift.
Story stones work really well with children who have SEN barriers too. A Year 5 boy at school last year was able to use story stones to access his imagination and the resulting story was awesome. First of all he used the stones his 1:1 made but also had great enjoyment making his own too.
