Sail boat craft

We made these sail boats as part of the #30DaysWild challenge. They were fun to make and even more fun to watch them sail down the river!

I didn’t think that we would be able to retrieve our boats after we’d put them in the water so I thought it was important to make them out of natural materials. We used some sticks, a biodegradable twine and a leaf for the sail. To make the base of the boat we made an overlapping square with the sticks and tied them together with twine. We then tied on more sticks across the base and another stick pointing upwards for the sail. When we arrived at the river we found a large leaf and tied it to the stick.

Penguin had great fun watching the boats sail down the river and also enjoyed videoing the experience, I’m just glad his camera is waterproof!!

Have you had fun playing in the river? Any ideas for fun river play?

  1. Such a cute idea – love it! We used to always play Pooh Sticks (from Winnie the Pooh fame…I think?!), where you each stand on one side of a bridge (upstream) and drop a stick, then rush to the other side of the bridge and see whose stick makes it over to the other side first! #FabFridayPost

  2. Aww this is such a sweet idea and one which my children would adore!! We have lots of streams round our way, we might even try it out this weekend! Thank you for the inspiration! #fabfridaypost

  3. I think this is lovely! Before I read the comment above from You the Daddy I was going to say it reminds me of Pooh Sticks. I love the idea of a babbling brook that the little ones can paddle in – reminds me of my childhood. The kids seem like they’re having great fun. #fabfridaypost xx

  4. These look great. I would never think of doing something like this. We have a river (stream) near us so worth a try when Piglet is older. #FabFridayPost

  5. That’s so cool! I kept meaning to do this with Ethan. We even pick some sticks together but never got around to doing it. I think as soon as we are back in the UK – we’ll definitely have to do this! This for the inspiration! 🙂 xx #FabFridayPost
